The literature on social entrepreneurship has gained importance. However, it remains fragmented in academia and to facilitate the development of a unified body a theoretical framework is necessary. This paper objective was to critically review the research on social entrepreneurship and evaluate which aspects are favorably addressed. For this purpose, 94 scientific articles available and distributed in different databases were analyzed: Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Ebsco and Google Scholar published between 2000 and 2020. Approaching this research allowed us to verify the evolution of the topic of social entrepreneurship over the last few years. However, it should be noted that the findings show a limited subject. After the analysis, the conclusion shows the difficulty of defining the concept of social entrepreneurship, its characteristics and types of social entrepreneurship.
