The Thales Myth
Abstract (en)
The place of Thales in the history of thought is problematized. It proceeds to analyze the correct interpretation of the phrase "everything is water" to measure its apparent triviality. It is argued that the scientific interpretation of the phrase is limited. The analogical interpretation is reached, but not merely poetic, but metaphysical: "everything flows" in the Heraclitean way; related to the Platonic metaphor of the river and its etymological interpretation of Plato's Cratylus. Thales is not simply a “materialist”, rather a monist. It concludes by vindicating the value of Thales' thought as the beginning of the Western philosophical tradition.

Se problematiza el lugar de Tales en la historia del pensamiento. Se analiza la correcta interpretación de la frase “todo es agua” para medir su aparente trivialidad. Se sostiene que la interpretación científica de la frase es limitada. Se llega a una interpretación analógica, pero no meramente poética, sino metafísica: “todo fluye” al modo heracliteo, en relación con la metáfora platónica del río y su interpretación etimológica del Crátilo platónico. Tales no es simplemente un “materialista”, sino un monista. Se concluye reivindicando la valía del pensamiento de Tales como inicio de la tradición filosófica.
