About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Cuadernos de Filosofía Latinoamericana (CFILOLAT) is a biannual, open-access scholarly journal published by the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Universidad Santo Tomás in the field of philosophy.
CFILOLAT publishes research articles and review articles in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French. The journal also welcomes case reports, book reviews, and translations of philosophical texts.
Throughout its long-standing trajectory, the journal has devoted particular attention to the following thematic area:
Latin American Philosophy
This section includes studies on:
- Latin American identity and being.
- The history of Colombian, Latin American, and Ibero-American thought.
- The history of ideas in Latin America.
- Latin American cultural and political philosophy.
- The reception of philosophical thought in Latin America.
- Issues related to the development of Latin American philosophy.
- Decolonial and intercultural philosophical studies.
In addition, the journal also considers contributions in the following complementary areas:
Theoretical and Practical Philosophy

Interdisciplinary Philosophical Research
Philosophical investigations that engage with other fields within the humanities, such as literature, art, and cultural studies.
Philosophy and Education
Studies exploring the relationship between philosophy and education, as well as contemporary research examining the role of philosophy within current social, economic, and political contexts that shape both professional practice and the teaching of philosophy and critical thinking.
Peer Review Process
The evaluation process consists of two stages.
Initial Editorial Review
First, the Editorial Team conducts an internal review to assess the originality of the manuscript using Turnitin and, when necessary, additional software tools to detect AI-generated text. The editorial review also considers formal aspects of the submission, including compliance with journal guidelines, completeness of author and manuscript information, as well as the overall quality and relevance of the article.
Double-Blind Peer Review
In the second stage, each manuscript is evaluated by external experts through a double-blind peer review process. Reviewers use a standardized evaluation form that assesses:
- Scientific criteria, including conceptual rigor and methodological soundness.
- Formal criteria, including compliance with the journal’s publication and referencing guidelines.
The journal does not undertake to return submitted manuscripts and will not consider manuscripts that fail to comply with the journal’s submission requirements.
Acceptance of a manuscript is contingent upon favorable evaluations by specialist reviewers. The Editorial Board reserves the right to introduce any formal modifications necessary to ensure conformity with the journal’s editorial standards.
Requests by authors to withdraw a manuscript must be confirmed in writing by the Editor-in-Chief.
If the submitted article is part of a research project, authors are requested to provide the following information:
- Project start and end dates.
- Executing institution(s).
- Funding institution(s).
The double-blind peer reviewers assess manuscripts using the journal’s standard evaluation form.

Corrections and Retractions Protocol
The journal follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics for handling errors and potential misconduct.
- When errors are identified that do not compromise the validity of the work, a correction notice will be published.
- If the findings are deemed unreliable due to major errors or misconduct, the article will be retracted.

Journal History
Cuadernos de Filosofía Latinoamericana is a biannual research journal founded in October 1979 within the movement to promote Latin American philosophical thought led by Universidad Santo Tomás.
With the decisive support of Father Joaquín Zabalza Iriarte, O.P., then Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, the journal’s first Editor-in-Chief was Roberto Salazar Ramos. The first issue was published in October 1979 with the aim of promoting Latin American philosophical thought through the work of the so-called Bogotá Group.
Over more than forty-five years of continuous publication, the journal has featured contributions from internationally recognized philosophers, including Enrique Dussel, Arturo Andrés Roig, Mauricio Beuchot, Leopoldo Zea, Guillermo Hoyos Vásquez, Rubén Sierra Mejía, Jorge Aurelio Díaz, Santiago Castro-Gómez, Leonardo Tovar, and Damián Pachón Soto.
