The Constructive and Redemptive Force of Remembrance in Walter Benjamin: On the Memories of Violence in Colombia
Abstract (en)
This article explains the concept of remembrance (Eingedenkenken) in the light of Theses on the Philosophy of History (Über den Begriff der Geschichte, 1940), which from the Benjaminian Jewish perspective confers a redemptive quality to the suffering of the victims. Remembrance in Benjamin implies a messianic vision of politics and history, that is, a tool for the fight against the violence of oblivion and, at the same time, an ethical reference in the demand for reparation and justice. From a contextual reading of the theses, we think about the socio‑political implications and impacts of the exercise of memory in the Colombian reality, the contributions to the construction of a collective discourse on the truth of violence, and the challenges that the recognition of the voices of the victims imply in the construction of solid democracies and the establishment of guidelines for non-repetition.

Este artículo propone elucidar el concepto de rememoración (Eingedenkenken) a la luz de las tesis sobre el concepto de historia Über den Begriff der Geschichte (1940), que desde la perspectiva judaica benjaminiana confiere una cualidad redentora al sufrimiento de las víctimas. Rememorar implica en Benjamin una visión mesiánica de la política y de la historia, es decir, una herramienta de lucha contra la violencia del olvido y a su vez un referente ético en la exigencia de reparación y justicia. A partir de una lectura en contexto de las tesis pensamos en las implicaciones e impactos sociopolíticos del ejercicio de la memoria en la realidad colombiana, los aportes en la construcción de un discurso colectivo sobre la verdad de la violencia y los desafíos que implica el reconocimiento de las voces de las víctimas en la construcción de democracias sólidas y en el establecimiento de pautas para la no repetición.
