La reflexión sobre la historia humana abre horizontes insospechados.
Indaga por los fundamentos y aclara contextos. La historia remite
permanentemente a los recursos con los que el hombre ha contado para su supervivencia, así como al escenario en el que debe interactuar. Comprender el tiempo y el espacio en que la humanidad ha vivido la sitúa en el presente y la prepara para planear su futuro. La reflexión sobre la historia humana debe mostrar las obligaciones éticas que tienen que ver con la responsabilidad, de compromiso común, de tareas urgentes. Reconocer la responsabilidad histórica implica necesariamente replantear el puesto del hombre en el planeta. Es posible que reconocer la responsabilidad ecológica le puede resultar difícil a un pequeño comerciante de aldea, pero menos complicado a un estudioso de los sistemas climáticos hoy, que inevitablemente debe remitirse con frecuencia a las causas de los fenómenos y de los cambios. Mucho menos difícil le será a un estudioso de la historia de la especie humana que comprende cómo la humanidad apenas vive su adolescencia y que, sin embargo, el planeta en el que se habita pareciera estar deteriorándose a un ritmo acelerado. Todo análisis sobre el sentido de la humanidad ha de desembocar necesariamente en una reflexión responsable sobre el destino del planeta, más aún, sobre su sostenibilidad.

The reflection on human history opens unsuspected horizons. It inquires about the fundamentals and clarifies contexts. History refers constantly to the resources man has had for his survival, as well as the scene in which he should interact. Understanding the time and space in which humanity has lived places it in the present and prepares it for planning its future. The reflection on human history must show the ethical obligations that have to do with the responsibility, of common commitment, of urgent tasks. Recognizing historical responsibility necessarily involves rethinking the place of man in the planet. It is possible that recognizing the ecological responsibility may result difficult for a small businessmen from a village, but less complicated for a scholar of weather systems today, who inevitably must frequently refer to the causes of the phenomena and the changes. Much less difficult will be for a scholar of the history of the human species who understands how humanity is just living its adolescence and that, however, the planet in which he lives in seems to be deteriorating at a rapid pace. Every analysis on the meaning of humanity must necessarily lead to a responsible reflection on the fate of the planet, moreover, on its sustainability.
