Wolfram Eilenberger nos narra, con un entusiasmo fuera de lo normal en el ámbito de la filosofía, la vida de cuatro pensadores (Benjamin, Cassirer, Heidegger y Wittgenstein), los cuales son, para él, magos, en clara alusión a la obra de Thomas Mann La montaña mágica. Más que su trabajo intelectual, nos cuenta cómo fueron sus vivencias, es decir, sus vidas y los acontecimientos que sufrieron en esa década tan especial para el desarrollo político y cultural del siglo XX.
