Abstract (en)

This contribution discusses the phenomenon of improvisation from the perspective of the sociological theory of action and interaction. It postulates that the notion of action, frequently accepted within the theory and defined as either planned or routinized conduct, is not adequate to explain phenomena like improvisation processes. Hence, the notion of “musical material” is postulated as one of the central elements to elucidate improvisation, together with the interaction and the communication medium employed. The article proposes to understand the musical material as sedimented knowledge that is generated, transformed and adapted in the moment and the situation of improvisation. This enables us to explain not only the routine dimension of action and interaction, but also its creative
and spontaneous aspects.

Abstract (es)

La contribución aborda el fenómeno de la improvisación musical desde la teoría sociológica de la acción y la interacción. Postula que la noción de acción, frecuentemente aceptada en la teoría y definida como conducta planificada o tipificada, no resulta adecuada para explicar fenómenos como los procesos de improvisación. De allí que se postule la noción de “material musical” como uno de los elementos centrales, junto con la interacción y el medio de comunicación utilizado, para explicar la improvisación. El artículo propone entender al material musical como conocimiento sedimentado que es generado, transformado y adaptado en el momento y situación de improvisar, generando así la posibilidad de explicar no solo la dimensión rutinaria de la acción e interacción improvisatorias, sino también su aspecto creativo y espontáneo.

Socióloga argentina adscrita al Departamento de Humanidades de la Universidad de Konstanz. En el marco del III Encuentro de la Red de Cooperación presentó los avances sobre la investigación que realiza en torno al tema de la improvisación. El presente artículo recoge los aportes más significativos socializados el 1 y 2 de septiembre en el Instituto de Investigaciones “Gino Germani” de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. La Red de Cooperación Académica entre Alemania y América Latina es financiada por el Servicio Alemán de Intercambio Académico. Los temas de investigación de la autora son sociología de la cultura, de la música y del conocimiento, teoría de la acción, creatividad e improvisación.
