This article aims to develop some of the fundamental principles of pragmatism, from its historical origins as a philosophical stance, and those that contribute to overcoming the dichotomy between qualitative and quantitative research in social research. Through an analysis of the foundations of pragmatism as a stance oriented towards the construction of useful knowledge, this essay questions the dichotomy and promotes the use of mixed methods in exploring and transforming reality through empirical studies. It is concluded that polarization in research is neither significant nor productive, and an integrative approach to social research is proposed based on the principles that characterize pragmatism.

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar algunos de los principios fundamentales del pragmatismo desde sus orígenes históricos como postura filosófica y, en particular, aquellos que aportan a superar la dicotomía entre investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa en la investigación social. A partir del análisis de los fundamentos del pragmatismo como postura orientada a la construcción de conocimiento práctico, este artículo cuestiona esa dicotomía y promueve la utilización de métodos mixtos para la exploración y transformación de la realidad, mediante estudios empíricos. Se concluye que la polarización en la investigación no es significativa ni productiva. Por lo tanto, se propone un enfoque integrador para la investigación social, basado en los principios que caracterizan el pragmatismo.

Este artigo tem como propósito desenvolver alguns dos princípios fundamentais do pragmatismo desde suas origens históricas como postura filosófica, e em particular aqueles que contribuem para superar a dicotomia entre pesquisa qualitativa e quantitativa na pesquisa social. A partir da análise dos fundamentos do pragmatismo como postura voltada para a construção do conhecimento prático, este ensaio questiona tal dicotomia e promove a utilização de métodos mistos na exploração e transformação da realidade por meio de estudos empíricos. Conclui-sé que a polarização na pesquisa não é significativa nem produtiva e propõe-se uma abordagem integradora para a pesquisa social a partir dos princípios que caracterizam o pragmatismo.
