Abstract (en)

Not long ago, Tolstoy wrote a tale called “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” It told the story of a man obsessed with the idea of possessing land who left his homeland to venture into lands that belonged to natives. They were not aware of the lands’ worth and traded it for mere trinkets. When he arrived before them, the chief ofered him the challenge of granting him all the land that he could cross in a day. Greed overcame him and he took such a long journey that he could not stand. He returned at dusk and after trekking such a long distance, he died in front of the chief. The chief gave the order to dig a two meter grave to bury the deceased.

Hace no mucho tiempo Tolstoi escribió un cuento con el nombre “¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre?” En este se relataba la historia de un hombre obsesionado por la idea de posesión de la tierra, que fue capaz de dejar su lugar natal para aventurarse hacia los territorios que poseían algunos nativos, quienes, desconocedores de su valía, la cambiaban y regalaban por baratijas. Cuando llegó ante ellos, el jefe de los nativos le propuso el reto de que toda la tierra que lograra recorrer durante un día, de sol a sol, sería suya. La avaricia lo poseyó y emprendió un camino tan largo, que no pudo soportarlo. Regresó justo al atardecer, tras haber recorrido una extensión sumamente vasta, para caer muerto a los pies del jefe de los nativos. Este ordenó cavar una fosa y enterrar al difunto. Simplemente necesitó poco más de dos metros de tierra.
