El presente artículo entrega algunos resultados de la investigación La nación y la poesía. En éste, se señala uno de los aspectos más destacados de la relación entre la literatura y la vida social y política de finales del siglo XIX en Colombia. A través del estudio de la novela Lirio negro de José María Vargas Vila se evidencia una de las formas literarias de la imposibilidad de la construcción de una nación en Colombia a partir del principio de lo que aquí llamamos “autoaniquilación de la aristocracia.”
